Children's software can teach basic skills, tune up academic performance, and launch a learning expedition. Software can be playful, instructive and practical. And although using software to create a picture, map a vacation, or develop plot lines for a story may be second nature to many of today's young families, software should supplement, not supplant reading a book, drawing a picture, or building a fort in the backyard.
