The school assignment is to write an autobiography. High-school Senior Robert Radkovitz chooses an unusual format, a composite of his own oral narration and snippets of recordings. The choice is apt, as Robert's life has been played out to an array of sounds and their effects. The father he never knew had been a DJ, and Robert, armed with a sample of his father's voice on tape, has spent years searching the airwaves for that voice, that missing voice. Now, composed of faceless radio patter from around the country, the soothing sounds of his mother's singing, and the comments of friends and family, the project/production is finished. The whole, i.e, Robert's task, this audio tape, and the original book, is a remarkable "concert" with many movements, orchestrated by author Paul Fleischman, and ably performed by a carefully chosen cast. If new to the story, most listeners will naturally "seek" out the book, allowing the transcript of Robert's memories to resonate again and again.
