Review:
In this near breathtakingly beautiful rendition of a Russian folktale, the Russian-born illustrator Gennady Spirin has produced one of his most ornate and romantic works. Reminiscent of medieval manuscript illumination or the art deco illustrations of Kay Neilsen, Spirin's opulent pictures reveal the artist's prodigious talent for rendering costume and landscapes. The tale itself is about three sons of a Tsar and the difficult task he assigns to them: to find the firebird that is eating the fruit of his golden apple tree. In tried and true fashion, it is the youngest son who succeeds, winning the hand of a beautiful princess along the way. Beyond the rich illustrations, there are floral border designs that enhance the pictures on each page. It is, in short, a remarkable book. Any child with a penchant for fairy tales will not want to miss this one.
