Review:
The winner of a great many awards for his illustrations, artist Jerry Pinkney changes the locale of Hans Christian Andersen's tale by transporting it from China to Morocco - a move that favors Mr. Pinkney's interest in the exotic costumes and architecture of Northwest Africa. Each page provides a rich feast for the eyes - opulent turbans and robes, lush greenery, and wondrous palace furnishings. Luckily, the Andersen tale is strong enough to compete with its lavish setting, and young listeners will be caught up in the competition between the "little, plain, simple" real nightingale and its artificial, wind-up substitute (all sparkling with silver and gold). A tribute to the art of illustration, Pinkney's pictures rank among his best. He has given us a fairytale extravaganza.
