Review:
Abikanile spies on her mother while she prays at the river for the wisdom to save their village from the approaching slavers. These slavers strategy is to first trap the village hunters and watchmen in outlying areas so that when they enter the village there is no one strong enough to oppose them. Abikanile's mother, Njemile, is clever enough to outwit them, however, with her own mother's help. Three generations of African women find the courage to save their village in this exciting story of good versus evil in which a child literally leads them. The illustrations, oil paint over complex pencil drawings, are exceptionally evocative.
