Review:
The bulk of the praise here goes to the creativity and grand scale of this miniseries that first aired on ABC in early summer. It's much better to watch without the commercial interruptions, although at 240 minutes it's almost impossible to do it one sitting. Based on the popular picture books by James Gurney, Dinotopia is an enchanting viewing experience. Producer Robert Halmi Sr., known for his big projects such as Gulliver's Travels doesn't disappoint in the movie's visual magnitude. Waterfall city is breathtaking to see. The dinosaurs are mesmerizing to watch. Most intriguing is the concept of humans and dinosaurs living and talking and interacting together in a strange new world. The plot revolves around two teen half-brothers, Karl (Tyron Leitso) and David (Wentworth Miller), who are marooned on Dinotopia when the plane piloted by their father crashes. From there, the boys try to find a way off the island while becoming entrenched in the Dintopian way of life. There are flaws in the story and at times, it's all just a little bit silly. But overall, the camaraderie, adventure and peaceful dino messages make for hours of pleasurable viewing.
