Review:This artsy little creativity program plays for an audience younger than the publisher recommends—and plays much better than you’d expect. What appears to be a collection of rerun activities cloned from other standard children’s software is, in fact, a wonderfully innovative, smile-inducing grab-bag of fun. Most of it is easily adjusted to include tikes at the mouse pad. Because there’s no storyline or linear progression through a series of challenges, children can drop in and out of its five attention-holding activities as they please. One of the sweetest of the activities is the “Snowflake” maker: Kids make virtual cuts (on-screen from a menu of cuts) in folded paper, click on the magnifying glass, and the program shows the unfolded snowflake design they’ve created. The matching game is multi-sensory and includes not just pictures to match, but words, shapes, numbers (also read aloud) and sounds. Spin the Kaleidoscope you’ve created by mixing up different shapes and colors, and view the fascinating and moveable art patterns. Repair, the toughest of the tasks, is to repair the Gearworks machine filled with funny, colored gears. Kids must use logic and listen carefully to instructions to succeed. Biggest surprise is the Coloring Book. Though simple in its line drawings and bucket-dump method of using the many color selections, as kids color between the lines, the drawings come alive with those colors in a smaller motion screen.
