Review:
It is seldom that a simple, straightforward counting book is as engaging and rewarding for adult page-turners as it is for child viewers. But photographer Alda has a sharp eye and a witty turn of mind, enabling her -- and us -- to see numbers in the unlikeliest of places, both in nature and our everyday world. Thus, two halves of a bagel smeared with cream cheese make a perfect eight, and the mouth and eye of a fish on display at the fish market comprise an easily recognizable ten. Alda’s book goes from one to ten, then back again, allowing us to enjoy her photographic high jinx two times round. The book’s one drawback is that it provides only number recognition rather than a sense of the quantity involved in each number symbol. Nevertheless, as an aesthetic experience for the whole family, it rates an A plus.
