Review:
Here is a superior collection of seven stories about, and for 8-12 year olds. One of the best is about a boy's natural desire to learn something about the homeless man who sits across the street from his apartment house; another concerns a girl's sadness after her brother has run away from their unhappy home. There is also a spine-tingling ghost story about two pet cats who have recently died, and a memorable account of a birthday party like no other.

Often Avi’s stories take place in troubled homes, but all of them are about matters of interest to their audiences: peer pressures, unfair teachers, the need to be popular. The author’s voice strikes the right notes, and the black and white prints, one at the start of each tale give a tantalizing inkling of what is to come.
