In 1881, Rodzina, an overlarge Polish twelve-year-old, finds herself shoved onto an Orphan Train with other youngsters from Chicago's "Little Wanderers' Refuge." Because of her size and competence, their thin, sharp-eyed chaperone, makes Rodzina responsible for the younger orphans. Calling this frosty woman, "Miss, " Rodzina is promptly informed that her title is "Doctor." Told in a wryly humorous first person, our young heroine dubs her nemesis, "Miss Doctor" for the rest of their journey west. The adventure, prolonged by Rodzina's failure at their various stops to be adopted by a suitable family, reveals a few very nasty close calls - and some surprises.

Karen Cushman is a master of historical fiction; her contrary females are wonderful protagonists.
