Review:
Of all God’s creatures, whales are among the most mysterious. Eve Bunting’s lyrical text is long on the musings of a father and young son as they watch the whales swim by. What facts we learn come from a no nonsense page at book’s end. For example, orcas are not true whales; They are members of the dolphin family. A full-grown male can be as much as 27-feet long and weigh up to 11 tons -- heavier than many African elephants. Calling out to one another in clicks, whistles and screams, their oceanic talking adds to their mystery. Lambert Davis’s page-size paintings allow the listener to join the father and son as they watch the whales parade by, wondering whether the orcas are watching them as well. An interested child will turn the pages of this handsome book again and again.
