Review:
Lovers of animals, the jeweler and his wife often visited the Bronx Zoo. Finally, the wife said, "Why don't you follow your heart and work at the Zoo?" So he did. One night he brought home a pitiful baby lion, MacArthur, for his wife, Helen Frances Theresa Delaney Martini, to nurse, which she did admirably. Next, he brought home Dacca, Rajpur, and Raniganj, a litter of Bengal tigers. Rajpur was so cold and thin that he would have died if Helen had not put him on a heating pad and spent hours moistening his mouth with milk.

Finally, in 1944, she fixed a storage room at the zoo as an animal nursery and became the first woman keeper in the history of the Bronx Zoo - raising twenty-seven baby tigers as well as innumerable other zoo babies. Animal illustrations are in watercolor and torn paper collage. An excellent biography for young children about a fascinating woman and her "babies."
