Review:
Author Ursula Hegi takes a subject seldom confronted in books for younger children and weaves a tender tale about Trudi, a small girl who will always remain small, because she is a dwarf. At night she goes to sleep hoping to wake up and be the size of other girls her age. It is not to be: Trudi knows none like herself—until the day she meets Pia, a fearless lion tamer in a traveling circus. Pia also happens to be a dwarf, one no taller than Trudi. The newfound friends together weave a fantasy about a magic island, “the island of the little people where everyone is our height.” When Pia assures Trudi that the world contains hundreds of people just like them -- Pia herself has met 104 in her circus travels the child feels a giddy joy: being a dwarf can be normal, even beautiful. No longer will she be enveloped in loneliness. This bittersweet story about being “different” will appeal to a wide audience. Artist Potter brings the protagonists to life without a hint of mawkishness or false sentimentality. An unusual and worthwhile work.
