Review:
Esi had always been fascinated with the boss's rifle that was secured on a rack under the thatch at Mackay's game farm. Now at fifteen, he was assigned the task of cleaning the room, but the gun was no longer there. It was, however, crucial to the pivotal incident in Esi's journey toward independent thinking and independence. Beginning in the 1940's, the author has written seven short stories - one for every decade through the year 2000. The stories capture a South Africa through the eyes of children of different races all touched by the history of Apartheid. Few end well, but the brief vignettes capture the awakening of children's minds to injustice.

The foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu points out that it is important for South Africans to be unable to deny their terrible history and for all of us to renew our commitment to fundamental human rights. All of these stories are well-told, compelling, and decidely thought-provoking.
