Born in Shrewsbury, England in 1809, Charles Darwin simply couldn't fit into his father's plans for him to be a doctor. The fallback idea for him to be a clergyman also failed. With keen observational skills and an absolute passion for nature, he finally received his father's permission to sail as a naturalist aboard the "Beagle," whose mission was to explore the southern coast of South America. Darwin also sailed into history.

The minute pointillism and exquisite details of the illustrations are simply mind-boggling. With a muted palette of blue, green, and tan, every page or double-page spread invites close study. The text expresses Darwin's life and ideas while a multitude of small pictures in varied shapes expand and enrich the text enormously. Not a group book, this is a thinking book for a thinking child. A tour de force.
