Review:
For decades Weston Woods did little more than put a camera on a page and add an enchanting narrator’s voice and music to its adaptations of wonderful children’s books. But the literary-minded company has slowly advanced with the advent of computer-generated animation and increasing competition in the video market. This DVD offers two of its newest creations in this nicely chosen aggregation of bedtime stories. Goodnight Gorilla is yet another Peggy Rathmann story that works well on screen, especially with amusing visual additions made to the almost wordless story (the few words spoken are uttered by actor Anthony Edwards). With How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, there is a kind of video-game energy to the yarn about dinosaurs going to sleep in human’s houses. This rendition is a bit scarier than the book but remains an artful delight. The other stories on the disc have their narrative advantages despite lower production values, but Forest Whitaker’s narration of Dav Pilkey’s award-winner, The Paperboy, feels just right. Viewers can choose a Read Along option for text captions. (Running time: 51 minutes)
