Review:
With its Asian perspective, Sagwa: The Chinese Siamese Cat is a rarity in children¹s programming. Sprung from the mind of author Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club), the PBS Kids series balances its cultural richness with characters and stories that appeal to children of all backgrounds. Though the animation sometimes seems simplistic, the Asian-influenced colors and setting lift the visuals for the tales about a feline who lives with her family in the sumptuous home of the Foolish Magistrate. In "Feline Friends," the first of the two programs (together totaling 105 minutes), three episodes show Sagwa learning the ups and downs of friendship. Of particular interest is "Lucky Bat," which stars a comical bat named Fu-Fu who befriends Sagwa despite their differences. For the "Sagwa’s Family Tree" program, tales of family history branch throughout. Amy Tan herself anchors the best of the special features (which also include a trivia game and printable coloring pages) as she discusses the origins of Sagwa and her views on what children get from reading.
