The Looney Tunes Golden Collection
Fall 2004 DVDReview:
The Looney Tunes Golden Collection is aptly named. This spectacular
collection of classic Warner Bros. cartoons is solid gold, not just because
of the brilliant animated shorts but because of the plethora of
commentaries, historical documentaries on the minds behind the madness, and
the "lost" cartoons burned into the four-disc set. Parents will revel in the
clever dialogue, visual ingenuity, and background provided by commentators
like voice actor Stan Freberg and filmmaker Greg Ford. Kids will have a
blast with this timeless gathering of smart aleck, dastardly, and crazy
characters. The discs are smartly organized into The Best of Bugs Bunny,
Best of Daffy and Porky, and two discs of Looney Tunes All-Stars (featuring
Wile E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn, and Tweety, among many others). One caveat
about violence. Looney Tunes certainly bend reality with exploding duck
faces (poor Daffy) and disastrous falls (the deserving Coyote). Though many
kids may know the difference between cartoon mayhem and reality, others may
be disturbed or even encouraged to bop their siblings or friends Looney
Tunes style. In any case, it may be best to view these cartoons with your
kids (if only for the fun of it) and hold off from screening them until they
are of a reasonable age. Overall, this is a true treasure of imagination
worth having in your DVD library.
