Sarah Weeks’ heroine is surely a future lawyer, who lays out her defense by methodically taking issue with the charges against her (namely, being “wild” in the house). As she asserts, “Do I snarl? Do I snap? Climb a tree to take a nap?” While pleading her case, we see the proof of her “civilized” nature contrasted with the genuinely wild behavior of lions, bison, rhinos and raccoons, who commit such crimes as scaring the hair off the cat. The little girl’s indignation is funny and endearing, two qualities that are echoed by Heather M. Solomon’s chaotic watercolor illustrations. (Sure, the wolves are upending the trashcans, but make no mistake, there is definite child-high scribbling on the walls, too!) Parents will get as much of a kick out of this book as children, watching a little girl transform from a ball of fury in a time-out chair to the sweet and demure figure seen on the last page.
