Review:
There are times in life when nothing will do but a sweet crêpe served fresh from a vendor’s wagon on the edge of the Luxembourg Gardens. Anything else is a just thin pancake eaten on the run. If that image has evoked a cascade of memories, or it simply reminds you that the children in your life have been clamoring for a trip abroad, you will want to add City Walks: Paris to your collection of travel guides. It is as billed: 50 Adventures on Foot. Chronicle Books has created a deck of cards, each with a Paris attraction or neighborhood (arrondissement) briefly, cogently described on one side, with a simple and elegant map on the other—the recommended walking route clearly marked. Shuffle them in the morning in your hotel and deal yourself two or three adventures a day. The just isn’t a so-so walk in the bunch for a host of reasons, not the least of which is that Paris is the perfect city to explore a pied.

These self-guided tours hit the expected high notes . . . Notre Dame Cathedral, the Sainte Chapelle, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre . . . but they also impart insider scoop on where to settle in for peerless people watching, where you’ll find a sublime macaroon to satisfy your child’s sweet tooth, and how to get to one of the best toy shops in the city. Take a card, any card, and Paris is at your feet in every sense of the phrase.
