Moralin lives in an ancient world in a walled city with her ruling-class caste. Among The other castes of the city are priests and priestesses, all served by silent slaves who have white masks permanently affixed to their faces. The city is famous for it's unique ability to produce silk, a closely guarded temple secret. Moralin is destined for temple service to the "Great Ones" in whom she believes. Until that time, her beloved grandfather has encouraged her to train in disguise in the fighting yard with the boys. She is a talented fighter.

She plans with several other girls to take an adventure before they join the temple. Moralin and the girls decide to sneak out through a tunnel.
