Review:
Alvin, who lives with his single mother and his great-grandmother, is immensely overprotected. Middle school is a bright spot in his life and so is being assigned a report on his personal hero, the African-American Arctic explorer, Matthew Hensen. When he admits to his mother that a drug-pusher whom he knows has approached him on his way home, his mother decrees that his neighbor, Mrs. Keeys, must walk him back and forth to school. This ultimate indignity causes Alvin to run away with vague plans to locate possible descendants of his hero. The story is a shivery, compelling adventure. Alvin is smart and courageous, but sometimes his survival is a matter of luck.
