Review:
Corduroy may be the lead segment of this collection on friendship, but the true gem is the third tale, Here Comes the Cat! Animated by a Russian team, this cartoon features endearing mice and inventive images in a story about a mouse town running from a cat who turns out to be a real friend. This delightful translation of the book makes the purchase of the DVD worth it. Leading off the video is the aforementioned Corduroy, based on the books by Don Freeman. Puppetry and an actor in a Corduroy suit (on a set filmed to look miniature) are a couple of methods used to bring the famous teddy bear to life. The story involves both a little girl who wants to buy the bear and the trouble he gets into at the toy store the night before she comes to take him home. The harrowing music and the glaring close-ups of the bear are a little scary for young ones. Another story, Yo! Yes (a simple but adorable yarn about friendship between two kids of different races) and The Rainbabies (a lovely original fairy tale about a childless couple who care for children born from a moonshower) add enchantment to this fine example of how video can inspire reading.
