Review:
A clever “cautionary tale” about selfishness (with a bit of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” splashed in), The Great White Man-Eating Shark upstages the timelessly adorable Curious George. For the fishy tale, the animation is simple but true to the book, written by Margaret Mahy and illustrated by Jonathan Allen, as it shows a shark-looking boy named Norvin who wants to scare people away from swimming in the cove he loves. The segment on Curious George Rides a Bike is sweet but plain. Despite also being rather basic in its shots of Rachel Isadora’s illustrations, author Patricia C. McKissack’s energetic narration of her own Flossie and the Fox is as delightful as the tale of a girl who outfoxes a fox. The bonus stories of mischief, The Happy Lion and Cat and Canary, ably represent unique books with morals about being kind and careful.
