Review:
Wall-to-wall laughs pack this clever DVD package. The first disc takes viewers through the entire Lion King tale through the eyes of Timon and Pumbaa, the meerkat and warthog who give the original film its unforgettable Broadway-quality laughs. Once again, Nathan Lane (Timon) and Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa) deliver one-liners and catchy tunes throughout a story about how their two characters apparently made it possible for Simba to ascend to Pride Rock. Animation is luscious and the addition of Timon’s family (mom is played by Julie Kavner and the uncle is Jerry Stiller) lays on more comic pedigree. The plot drags a bit, but kids won’t really care. On the second disc, Disney standards of quality roar proudly with such tracks as a spoofy behind-the-scenes look at Timon’s background and an interactive theme-park ride called “Timon & Pumbaa’s Virtual Safari 1.5.” The two-disc set will get lots of repeat plays and, while there’s little actual educational value, the G-rated laughs are priceless.
