Review:
Perhaps even more fun than the 1st grade software, this game has a cheerful Carnival theme that makes the challenging mental exercises a blast. Kids work through math and word games (the balloon popping game of opposites is a standout) that earn them tickets to attend the “Monster Review at Carnival Marvel.” The tickets are used to buy monster parts to create different funny monsters that you can then make dance to tunes you choose. With various skill levels to build up to, hints, and useful examples, this cartridge delights as it teaches. Although it’s quite educational – worthy of the attention of some first- and second-graders -- parents will find that kids can get a little addicted to the game, so consider a half-hour time limit. A complaint about the game (or maybe even the Leapster itself) is that some testers have reported the recorded narration isn’t as articulate as a child needs. “B” sometimes sounds like “D,” which makes a difference in how a child answers. She may think she’s getting it right, but isn’t because she can’t make out what the narration is saying. Be attentive. If your child is having trouble hearing and understanding, take the time to help. That’s what you’re there for.
