Review:
Just when you figure every which-way of electronic Hoyle game anthologies had been released, here comes this unassuming collection of children's games. Most of the 12 are time-tested traditional favorites such as Go Fish, Snakes & Ladders, Old Maid, Hangman, War, Crazy Eights and Chinese Checkers. None too flashy, huh? Think again: What's delightful about this software is that its designers found very cool and innovative ways to translate these rather mundane kids' competitions into fun, funny and captivating computer games. The Battling Ships game borrows basics from the time-tested, territory-attacking “Battleships” but adds explosive special effects just for the fun of it. Play Checkers the old-fashioned way or click into a lilly-pond leapfrog version. The Hoyle Genie is always nearby to explain rules and help the stumped. Kids can use the Facemaker feature to create their own on-screen persona as they play against each other or their choice of the eight animated computerized competitors. Only downside is that other than learning to play games, as Sierra's “All Play, No Work” motto suggests, the educational content isn't in the cards.
