Review:
In 793 AD, eleven-year-old Jack lives a rigorous life on the small family farm by the North Sea. Choosing Jack as his apprentice, The Bard takes Jack away from his harsh father, loving mother, and spoiled little sister, Lucy. He learns a great deal, including a small amount of magic. When his village is attacked by beserkers from the north, The Bard places The Rune of Protection around Jack's neck. Exposed by Lucy, however, brother and sister are kidnapped, enslaved and taken across the sea to Jotenheim where Jack's ability to help himself is slowly destroyed ... let alone any ability to help Lucy.

This amazing story, set in the Scandinavian countries, uses Norse mythology as the source of magic that weaves strongly throughout the adventures of a boy who learns unbelievably well in spite of savage mistreatment.
