Review:
Starting first grade is a pretty big deal—but even more so when your teacher is a three-hundred-year-old alien who steals kids' baby teeth to send back to her home galaxy. Such is the urban legend perpetuated by second graders in Alison McGhee's funny and, ultimately, reassuring new book. The story is aimed squarely and humorously at children who are just starting to get their first loose teeth. It also addresses the nervousness that many children feel when they start "real" school. Harry Bliss's ink and watercolor illustrations include silly background details; the comical expressions on the children's faces often suggest the agony of Charlie Brown and company. An enjoyable read for wiggly-toothed kids, parents and teachers (alien or not).
