Review:
Orrec has inherited his family's psyche ability of "unmaking." Unable to control this power to destroy what he looks upon, his father blindfolds him. Orrec's friend, Gry, is able to summon animals but she refuses to use this gift for hunting. Ogge, an evil neighbor, with the “gift” of causing living things to sicken and die casts this spell on Orrec's mother.

Told in the first person, Orrec's story reveals that the protective power of the gifts (curses used against enemies) - is waning. Fear is rampant; friendships are rare. This dark fantasy, however, gradually is lightened by the love of Orrec and Gry. When the protagonist frees himself of his self-imposed blindness, more than the physical world is revealed.
