Review:
The award-winning artist David Diaz (his illustrations for Smoky Night earned him the 1995 Caldecott Medal) has a way with difficult texts and, to his credit, that way changes and grows richer with each new assignment he takes on. Author Scruggs’ words do not comprise a traditional story. With loosely-rhymed lines that blend in with the nonsense patter of jump-rope jingles, she lures/ the listener/reader into the rhythm and feel of actually jumping rope. Diaz’s pictures capture the magical freedom of the sport and should make converts among those who’ve never tried it. It is the sort of book that children will enjoy looking at on their own, and it might find a place in the classroom as a user-friendly work that invites a reluctant reader to recognize familiar verse she (or he) already knows from playing-jump-rope games with friends.
