Review:
Renowned African-American artist Faith Ringgold, a Caldecott winner for Tar Beach, puts her considerable talents to good use in this skillfully painted collection of traditional Christmas carols. Her color palette is filled with rich golds, blues, and other jewel tones, while baby Jesus and the multi-ethnic figures are rendered with a warm and radiant joy. The book itself merits attention and reading at Christmastime, but the companion five-song CD of carols sung by the Boys Choir of Harlem makes it exceptional. Songs include "Silent Night," "Joy to the World," and "Oh Holy Night." Ringgold's message in collecting these carols is one of peace, hope and love for humanity—something to be remembered not only at the holidays but as we conduct our daily lives.
