Review:
As a child, Henry Sayre was intrigued about art - where it came from and how mit was created. Young Sayre and his siblings would "wonder out loud why and how these pieces of art were painted, and sometimes even make up stories about them...And we would ask out parents about them: Who painted the cave paintings? Who is Mona Lisa? Who is Nike and where is Samothrace?" In answering those questions for the reader, Sayre has selected 50 of the world's most celebrated artworks and describes, for children, when they were made and by whom, and how they fit into the fascinating history of art.

A time line on each page travels the reader throughout history starting about 22,000 B.C. with a carved mammoth tusk sculpture and ending in the late 1900's with a painting by Magritte. Frescoes were made around 2000 B.C. in Greece, that Egyptians didn't use soap, that the Olmecs discovered that latex from rubber trees bounced, and that George Caleb Bingham was not only a painter but also a politician.

Sayre created this book in hopes that children will learn to love art, and the stories behind the masterpieces as clearly and deeply as he did.
