Antiestablishment men of genius, author Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith have again struck a blow against formulaic education. They disrespectfully poke fun brilliant at poetry and science - simultaneously. In the illustrations, the round-eyed kid with glasses is zapped by his teacher, Mr. Newton (yes, the name is significant,) with the curse of "science verse" - finding the poetry of science in everything. Our small hero is swept through the book with ludicrously funny parodies of famous poems and rhymes such as, "Mary had a little worm..." Until now, the demise of the dinosaurs was unknown. Now, thanks to Jon Scieszka, we know that they were bored to extinction by teachers.

The entertaining abstract illustrations, help children relish the witty poems and delicious malice. Adults will recognize the parodies. There is something to offend everyone.
