Review:
During WWII, Ada Ruth's mother leaves her in her grandmother’s care because she has heard that they are hiring colored women in Chicago. The family is so poverty-stricken that when a small black kitten shows up at the door, Ada Ruth's grandmother reminds her frequently that they can't keep it. Somehow, despite grumblings, the kitten stays on, and when a longed-for letter from Mama to Ada Ruth isn’t delivered, the kitten offers her a measure of comfort.

E.B. Lewis captures the thoughtful, pensive mood of the story with a sepia tinged palette and muted watercolors. His portraits, especially the fall of light, are beautiful; the body language of the characters is expressive; and he touchingly expands the story on the last page.
