Review:
Edward and his father work in a hotel in Memphis. Edward's favorite times, however, are spent with the family on their farm listening to the radio, especially the marches of John Philip Sousa. One fateful day, Edward finds a baby wild duck which he nurses and persuades his father to let him take to the hotel, "Please, Pa...I'll keep him in a box in the pantry next to the cookstove where he'll be warm." Pa warns that he must keep him hidden or they could both lose their jobs.

Edward not only hides his beloved duck, he trains him to march to the tunes of Sousa.

Patricia Polacco tells and paints a wonderful story full of feathers and flutter of how Edward Pembroke became the first "Peabody Duckmaster." Even now, as in Edward's day, ducks are brought down the elevator from rooftop cages, and march on a red carpet to a tune from Sousa. They go from the elevator to the fountain where they disport themselves during the day.
