Review:
Want to bring honest-to-goodness multicultural, child-friendly music into your home and/or classroom? This CD may help children gain a better appreciation for, and understanding of, the diversity of music around the globe. The music ranges from an Arabic call-and-response tune by Maryem Tollar to Guiomar Campbell's Brazilian samba celebration of sugar cane. Highlights are numerous and include: a wonderful Ghana game song performed by the Baobab Youth Performers; the Toronto Tabla Ensemble demonstrate the language that percussion players and dancers use to communicate with each other; the Flying Bulgur Klezmer Band high-flying circus-style music, and Loretto Reid and Brian Taheny's performance of a lively Irish reel on pennywhistle and the bodhran drum. Music educator Sophia Grigoriadis has assembled nearly an hour of keenly picked music, enhanced by well-annotated liner notes and ideas for classroom, or homeschool use for children ages 4-16.
