Review:
Genius, a word whose meaning has been eroded by over-use, is certainly entirely appropriate when applied to the life and varied accomplishments of Leonardo da Vinci. Master painter of the Italian Renaissance, astronomer, architect, engineer, cartographer, city planner, musician and naturalist, Leonardo had an insatiable curiosity-and a mind able to make remarkable practical use of most of what he learned. Serious-minded older children will find food for thought in these excerpts from the artist's own notebooks, skillfully woven into a free-wheeling narrative told by Leonardo's ten year old house servant and apprentice, Giacomo. Though the text is episodic and lacking in details a reader might like to know, we come away with a rich appreciation of this particular genius's accomplishments. Thanks to artist Bimba Landmann's evocative large paintings of 15th century Florence, the reader also acquires a sense of the milieu in which the artist flourished.
