Review:
Of all the classical composers, Russian-born Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) music may be the most instantly recognizable, because of the music of his ballets including Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Producer Susan Hammond has selected excerpts from his greatest works, to illustrate Tchaikovsky's often-emotionally charged music.

"Marche Slav" is a wonderful example of how he incorporated elements of traditional Russian folk music into classicaompostions; it also served as one of John Williams' many influences when writing the music for the "Star Wars" films. Children will instantly recognize the robust "Danse russe Trepak (Russian Dance)" from "The Nutcracker," and the lovely and delicate "Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy." The CD's fitting finale is the energetic "1812 Festival Overture," where kettle drums and brass sucessfully mimic the sound of fireworks.
