Review:
When Gooney Bird Greene and her second-grade classmates set out to create a Thanksgiving pageant, she places herself "right smack in the middle of everything." With her elbow-length gloves, "Al Einstein" T-shirt, and mismatched socks because "Wearing matching things gives me a feeling of ennui", Gooney's wardrobe is as varied as her vocabulary.

Teacher Mrs. Pidgeon offers to give the coveted part of Squanto to the student who can provide a room mother for the class, the resourceful Gooney immediately secures the role, with one condition: Her volunteer has requested to remain "incognito." After three weeks of playwriting, scenery painting, and costume designing, the big day arrives. Acting as Squanto, Gooney incorporates her love of language into the story of the first Thanksgiving by including favorite words in her speech, then asking a cast member to provide the definition. Luckily each student has a new dictionary; thanks again to Gooney Bird's efforts.

As the applause dies away, the room mother reveals herself - Mrs. Pidgeon's own mother! Once again, Gooney is smack in the middle of everything.
