Review:
This Scholastic DVD features three animated stories and one bonus story. William Steig's Caldecott Honor Book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble is a fairy tale based on the classic wish-fulfillment theme. Narrated by John Lithgow, this adaptation is charming and fresh. Possum Magic, written and narrated by Mem Fox, takes viewers on a tour around Australia and looks at favorite foods Down Under. Princess Furball, adapted by Charlotte Huck, is a variation on the Cinderella story. The bonus story The Wizard of Wallaby Wallow by Jack Kent rounds out the magical tales. DVD extras include the Spanish-language version of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. There is an option to make the stories "read-along," with the words shown as subtitles. However, children will need pretty good eyesight to read the small type. The audio quality on this transfer is clear and enjoyable. There is a slight side-to-side wobble on The Wizard but the motion isn't bad enough to detract from the tale. This moderately-priced DVD makes a pleasant collection for families to enjoy together.
