Second Chance Christmas: A Symphonic Story

Fall 2005 Storytelling

With the cadence of both Dr. Seuss and Clement Moore (author of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas), this poetic story is a reminder of the power and strength of beautiful music masterfully performed. The tiny village of Second Chance had been struck by a mining catastrophe decades earlier, resulting in the Scrooge-type mayor's mandate that "not one note of music" could ever again be played or sung in her town.

One Christmas Eve, a fierce snowstorm stranded a group of musicians who were traveling to their scheduled performance at Carnegie Hall, forcing them to spend the night at Second Chance. Hearing the "no-music" order from the mayor, they waited until she went home before unleashing their talents. As they performed one mesmerizing orchestral arrangement after another, the villagers gradually began remembering how Christmas used to be. The furious mayor returned and tried to halt the show, but the courage of one young boy (along with the talents of musicians such as Irving Berlin, J.S. Bach, Victor Herbert, and Robert Wendel) convinced her to reconsider (and ultimately reverse) her "rule", leaving villagers once again appreciating and enjoying the pleasures of holiday music.

An accompanying booklet provides the complete text to the symphonic story and the words for all included songs.
