Review:
Wars are always chaotic, but the history of the Vietnam War is mired in chaos and controversy. This straightforward, linear history makes it easier to follow the action and events both in Vietnam and the United States. The format of the book works well to chronicle the war of ten thousand days. The front and end papers have a time line superimposed on a battle scene. The text is on the left page of double-page spreads with a pertinent photograph on the right. Many left-hand pages also have a column labeled “Quick Facts.”

Although the author served as a marine lieutenant in Vietnam, his tone reflects the cool voice of his Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism. The carefully chosen photographs convey the emotion that the author leaves out of the text. This is a definitive work.
