RIF Reading Planet

RIF Reading Planet

Spring 2006 Website
Ages: 5 - 15 yrs.
Bright and colorful as a jar of jellybeans, this site has a lot going on—both visually and in the form of reading motivation for kids. Read-along stories and songs help younger children with spelling and pronunciation. A few are even in Spanish. Profiles of and interviews with authors and illustrators might interest true bookworms, as will the option to read or write a book review or browse suggested titles by author, title, or topic (horses, storms, flight, etc.) Signing up on the site enables readers to save books to their online bookshelf, as a wish list of books they would like to read later.

A site all about reading isn’t easy to pull off, so the creators have added features such as postcards that can be emailed to friends, stories that can be printed out and illustrated, an online coloring book, poetry maker, DIY story tool, and several other word games, two of which are bilingual. Authors-in-the-making should check out Writers’ Blocks—a game that adds children’s submitted text to build a new story each week. (Flash plug-in is required for most of the games.)
