Review:
This collection of five pan-and-scan book adaptations begins with Martin's Big Words, a biography of Martin Luther King by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier. Andrea Davis Pinkney has three books in the collection, Seven Candles for Kwanzaa; Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa; and Duke Ellington. All three are beautifully illustrated by Brian Pinkney. The one fiction segment is a tall-tale based on the life of folk hero John Henry, retold by Julius Lester and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. While the stories are as varied as the people and events themselves, the illustrations, compelling narrations and music scores make this a must-have for school and public libraries and many family collections. Given the discussion of the death of John Henry our testers suggest a slightly older age group than the publisher's recommended viewing age of four and up, but that might only be for households with sensitive children!
