Review:This pig-centric collection contains more than 60 “lap songs, finger plays, clapping games, and pantomime rhymes” loosely arranged in five categories: “Upsie, Downsie,” “Bumpety, Bumpety,” “Wiggle, Wiggle,” “Clap, Clap, Clap,” and “Take a Bow.” A generously-sized format, whimsical borders, delicate pastels, nicely varied layouts, instructions for adults, a mix of familiar and obscure rhymes, and a charming cast of porcine characters make this a collection to rival (but not replace) Rosemary Wells and Iona Opie's two earlier collaborations. The thirteen musical selections on the accompanying CD (whose piano scores appear along with guitar chords in the book) are, with the exception of a jazzy version of “The Eensy Weensy Spider,” purely utilitarian: useful to those who don't know the tunes and otherwise unremarkable. Yolen's graceful introduction strikes just the right note: “The lap is a kind of schoolroom. What a child learns there is learned forever. Peek-a-boo. I love you.”
