In Chicken and Cat, Sara Varon's debut picture book, a sweet story about home and friendship unfolds with hardly a word. Instead, Varon lets the expressive body language of her animal protagonists tell the tale against a scrubbed-up urban backdrop. There's something funny about the fact that Cat comes to the city to visit Chicken (rather than the other way around), and indeed the illustrations are influenced by comic book styling. As much as Cat appreciates the change of scene, he believes there's one colorful element missing in Chicken's neighborhood; his quest to make it just right for his friend brings the two buddies even closer together. Young children will enjoy the many sight-seeing adventures Chicken takes Cat on—riding the subway to Coney Island, biking to Central Park, and soaking up the hustle and bustle. And there are nice lessons here as well, teaching children to celebrate the joys of city life, while also demonstrating how nature can thrive even among concrete and glass.
