Review:
When the title page of a book declares that it was written as the author “was bound and suspended one hundred feet above the earth over a pit of flaming tigers,” you just know it's going to be a wild read. Adam Rex's first picture book doesn't disappoint. In Tree Ring Circus we follow the quiet life of a tree as it grows from seed to maturity and becomes home to the usual birds and chipmunks. But when the circus rolls into town the show really starts, as lions, tigers, a “whopping big bee,” thieving monkeys, and a runaway clown join the menagerie. (And when the elephant shows up, look out!) Rex's text is full of engaging rhyme, repetition, and circus-worthy whimsy, and his oil and mixed media illustrations are both quirky and charmingly old-fashioned. This is a wacky read-aloud romp that's sure to appeal to a young child's sense of humor.
