Review:
Eve Bunting's poignant new picture book is about constructing the Golden Gate Bridge, but moreover it's about the love and pride between sons and fathers. Robert's construction-worker dad is a skywalker—a high iron-man—so nicknamed because “He climbs so high that sometimes clouds come down around his shoulders. When the fog rolls in, he disappears completely.” It's a deceptively elegant name for a treacherous job, and it's only after an on-site accident that Robert truly understands the peril his father is in every day. In solidarity, Robert builds a jigsaw-puzzle bridge of his own, thinking of his father and the whole building team with each piece he places. Teamwork and friendship are important concepts in Bunting's story, which is in turns lyrical, tense, celebratory, and tender. The richly colored paintings are a strong complement to the text, and the brilliant red-gold of the bridge is especially striking.
