Review:
Criss Cross is like taking a stroll through a garden in bloom, with tiny winding paths, overhung with shrubbery, that branch off in different directions. Sometimes, when searching for your friend who came with you to the garden, your paths just miss crossing and you remain lost in your own personal garden. Lynne Rae Perkins begins her story, set in the '60s with the Mamas and the Papas and charming radio shows, with teenage Debbie browsing through her older sister's fashion magazine. She makes a wish, hoping that something different happens to her-and soon. Many coming of age books focus on big changes, but Criss Cross is different, perhaps more real. This is a story with nowhere to go, but it is a lovely walk in the garden, with time spent discovering old grade-school friends who gradually become new. Subtle changes overtake the teens featured in this book. How on one day your friend can help you try out a stick shift in a car, while the next he asks you to a movie. It is a leisurely paced coming of age book set in a more innocent time. Danielle Ferland reads this tale in which reality doesn't bite, it softly sings.
